Volume: The Truth Serum of Trading
Price moves on volume. A breakout on low volume is a fake breakout. A pullback on heavy volume is a strong bounce. Professional traders read volume before reading price. It tells you if the move is real or if retail traders are chasing.
Volume Interpretation Basics
Above-average volume on up days = strong buying. Above-average volume on down days = strong selling. Low volume on any move = lack of conviction. Low volume on strong price move = weak reversal (expect reversal of the reversal).
- High Volume Breakout: Price breaks resistance on 50%+ above average volume. Strong signal. Hold position.
- Low Volume Breakout: Price breaks resistance on low volume. Weak signal. Fade it or skip it.
- High Volume Pullback: Price pulls back from high on heavy volume. Strong bounce likely. Buy.
- Low Volume Pullback: Price pulls back on light volume. Weak pullback. Expect more downside.
Volume Divergence: The Reversal Signal
When price makes a new high but volume is declining, a reversal is coming. This divergence signals that fewer traders are confirming the move. Expect a reversal within 1-3 days.
Example: Stock up 10% over 5 days but volume declining each day. Fewer buyers are supporting the move. The reversal is coming.
On-Balance Volume (OBV): Cumulative Volume Indicator
OBV adds volume on up days, subtracts on down days. The cumulative result shows if buyers or sellers are accumulating positions long-term. When OBV is rising while price falls, accumulation is happening (strong reversal coming). When OBV falls while price rises, distribution is happening (breakdown coming).
Volume Profile: Where The Real Action Is
Volume profile shows total volume traded at each price level. High-volume nodes are support/resistance (many traders with positions there). When price returns to a high-volume node, expect strong reaction. Low-volume nodes are areas price passes through quickly (low trader interest).
Complete Volume Analysis System
Build a robust volume trading system:
- Calculate 20-day average volume
- On any price breakout, check if volume is 50%+ above average
- If yes: Strong signal, hold the position
- If no: Weak signal, fade or skip
- Check OBV for divergence (price up, OBV down = bearish divergence)
- Exit when volume dries up (momentum fading)
- Track volume profile on weekly charts for key support/resistance
Volume Indicators to Monitor
Volume Rate of Change: Shows acceleration of volume. Spiking volume = confirmation. Declining volume = weak move.
VWAP (Volume-Weighted Average Price): The price where most volume traded. Price above VWAP = strong buyers. Price below VWAP = strong sellers. Trades near VWAP are mean reversion setups.

The Volume Edge
Traders who ignore volume get whipsawed by fake breakouts. Traders who require volume confirmation eliminate 70% of losing trades. Volume is the difference between signal and noise.
