You Can't Improve What You Don't Measure
Most traders track P&L and ignore deeper metrics. But P&L hides the truth. A trader with 60% win rate can outperform 80% win rate if risk-reward is right. Track the real metrics.
The Essential 5 Metrics
If you track nothing else, track these:
- Win Rate (%): % of trades that make money. Target: 50%+
- Average Winner ($): Avg profit on winning trades
- Average Loser ($): Avg loss on losing trades
- Risk/Reward Ratio: Avg winner / avg loser. Target: 1:2 or better
- Expectancy ($ per trade): (Win rate × avg winner) - (Loss rate × avg loser)
Calculating Expectancy (The True Edge)
Example: 50 trades over 1 month
- 25 winners ($400 avg)
- 25 losers ($200 avg)
- Win rate: 50%
- Expectancy = (50% × $400) - (50% × $200) = $100 per trade
- 50 trades × $100 = $5,000 profit
With positive expectancy, consistency matters. Trade the same system 100 times, and edge compounds.
Advanced Metrics: Sharpe Ratio
Risk-adjusted returns (better than raw return %)
- Formula: (Average monthly return - risk-free rate) / Standard deviation
- Interpretation: How much return per unit of risk
- Target: Sharpe ratio above 1.0 is good; above 2.0 is excellent
- Example: 10% annual return with 5% volatility = 2.0 Sharpe (excellent)
Advanced Metrics: Maximum Drawdown
Biggest loss from peak to trough
- Calculation: "My biggest loss from my peak account balance"
- Example: Account at $100k peak. Drops to $70k. Max drawdown: 30%
- Interpretation: Can you emotionally handle a 30% loss?
- Target: Keep drawdowns below 20% if possible
Setting Performance Targets
Realistic targets by experience level:
- Beginner: 45-50% win rate, 1:1 risk-reward, positive expectancy
- Intermediate: 50-55% win rate, 1:2 risk-reward, $2+ expectancy per trade
- Advanced: 55-65% win rate, 1:3 risk-reward, consistent Sharpe > 1.0
Metrics Review Schedule
When to check your metrics:
- Daily: Current month win rate, YTD return
- Weekly: Sharpe ratio, risk-reward ratio
- Monthly: Full stats review, identify underperforming setups
- Quarterly: Annual performance vs. benchmark
TradePilot's analytics show these metrics automatically.
The Metrics Edge
Traders obsessed with metrics beat traders obsessed with P&L. Metrics are actionable; P&L is just a result.
