The Trading Journal: Your Competitive Weapon
Professional traders keep detailed journals. Every trade is recorded with entry reason, exit reason, setup type, and P&L. This data becomes the foundation for continuous improvement. Most retail traders skip journaling and repeat the same mistakes indefinitely.
What Goes In A Trading Journal
A complete trading journal entry includes:
- Date & Ticker: When and what you traded
- Entry Price & Reason: Why you entered (which setup triggered)
- Position Size & Risk: How many shares and max loss
- Exit Price & Reason: Why you exited (target hit, stop hit, time stop)
- P&L: Profit or loss in dollars and percentage
- Emotional State: Were you hesitant, confident, emotional?
- What Went Right: Entry was perfect? Timing was good?
- What Went Wrong: Should have exited earlier? Bad risk/reward?
- Setup Type: Golden cross, mean reversion, breakout, etc.
- Market Condition: Uptrend, downtrend, range?
- Improvement For Next Time: One specific thing to do better
Journaling Tools
Use spreadsheet (simple but manual) or trading software (automatic):
- Spreadsheet: Google Sheets, Excel. Free, flexible, but manual entry.
- Tradervue: Automatic trade logging from brokers. $15/month but worth it.
- TradingView: Built-in trade logging on charts (free).
Weekly Journaling Review
Every Sunday, review your trading week:
- Calculate win rate (% of profitable trades)
- Calculate average winner / average loser ratio
- Identify the setup type with highest win rate (focus on this)
- Identify the setup type with lowest win rate (avoid or improve)
- Find patterns: Do you hesitate on entries? Hold losers too long? Chase winners?
- Pick ONE improvement for next week (only one, don't try to change everything)
Monthly Journaling Review
Once per month, deep dive into your journal:
- Review all winning trades. What setup triggered? What was the market condition?
- Review all losing trades. What went wrong? Should you have exited faster?
- Calculate Sharpe ratio (risk-adjusted return over volatility)
- Compare your results to your backtest. Did live trading match predictions?
- Identify the worst trade. Exactly what would have prevented it?
- Set goals for next month (hit 60% win rate, larger average winners, etc.)
The Data-Driven Trader
After 200+ logged trades, patterns emerge. You discover:
- Which setups work best in different market conditions
- Your personal trading leaks (you always hesitate on tech stocks, you revenge trade Mondays, etc.)
- Optimal position sizing for your risk tolerance
- When NOT to trade (certain times of day, pre-earnings, etc.)
This data is worth thousands in coaching fees. You're coaching yourself with your own historical data.
Common Journaling Mistakes
Mistake 1: Journaling only big wins and losses. Log EVERY trade, even $50 losses. Consistency shows patterns.
Mistake 2: Not reviewing regularly. If you don't review, there's no improvement. Journal once per week minimum.
Mistake 3: Recording P&L only. Record emotional state and setup type. This reveals patterns.
The Journal Advantage
Traders with journals double their win rate within 6 months because they identify and fix leaks systematically. Traders without journals repeat mistakes forever.
