News Moves Markets Before Technicals Confirm
A CEO resignation, earnings surprise, or regulatory filing can move a stock 10%+ in minutes. If your news feed is 30 minutes delayed, you're reacting instead of anticipating.
Why Build a Custom News Feed?
Generic news feeds fail traders because:
- Too much noise (Tesla news when you trade Apple)
- Too slow (breaking news comes from specialized sources first)
- No sentiment filtering (important news hidden in clickbait)
- No portfolio context (news appears but impact unclear)
Best News Sources by Category
Different sources excel at different news types:
- Breaking news: Twitter/X (real-time), Bloomberg, Reuters
- Earnings & guidance: Seeking Alpha, Yahoo Finance, company IRs
- Executive moves: CorporateSecretary, LinkedIn, industry blogs
- Regulatory: SEC EDGAR, FTC.gov, industry watchdogs
- Analyst notes: Seeking Alpha, TradingView Ideas, newsletter writers
- Sentiment: StockTwits, Reddit, Twitter mentions
Building Your Perfect News Feed (Step-by-Step)
Create a curated feed focused on your holdings:
- List your core holdings (10-20 tickers you actively trade)
- Subscribe to tickers on multiple news sources
- Combine into one dashboard (IFTTT, Zapier, or manual aggregator)
- Set sentiment filters (only show news with conviction)
- Review 2x daily (morning and close) for catalysts
News Feed Tools and Platforms
Tools to aggregate and prioritize news:
- Feedly: RSS aggregator for blogs and industry sources
- Twitter Lists: Follow verified traders and financial journalists
- TradePilot: Integrated news feed with sentiment scoring
- Seeking Alpha: Comprehensive coverage with customized alerts
Identifying Material News (The Filter)
Not all news moves stocks. Focus on material catalysts:
- Earnings surprises: Beat or miss by more than 5%
- Guidance changes: Management changing forward guidance materially
- M&A activity: Mergers, acquisitions, spin-offs
- Executive changes: CEO/CFO departure or hire
- Regulatory: FDA approval, lawsuit, patent ruling
- Partnerships: New contracts or collaborations
News-Driven Trading Rules
How to trade catalysts safely:
- Wait for volatility to settle: Break news creates whipsaws; wait 30-60 min
- Confirm with technicals: News + chart confirmation = higher probability
- Position size smaller on news: Higher volatility = risk management important
- Track news accuracy: Which news sources have highest predictive power?
TradePilot's news feed highlights material catalysts on your watchlist.
The News Edge
Traders reading news fast catch moves before everyone else. A 5-minute head start in news is a month's head start in price action.
Which categories of news actually move a price
Most published stories are not market-moving, and filtering by category beats filtering by volume. The ones that repeatedly matter: earnings announcements and the size of the surprise, executive and board changes, mergers and partnerships, regulatory action and litigation, and analyst upgrades or downgrades.
Everything else is usually context rather than catalyst. Useful for understanding a company, poor as a trigger.
What to demand of an aggregator
Alerts scoped to your watchlist rather than the whole market, some filtering of relevant against irrelevant, a sentiment reading attached to each item, and enough source attribution that you can tell a wire service from an aggregator republishing one.
The last one matters more than it sounds. The same story syndicated across twenty outlets looks like twenty signals if nothing is deduplicating by origin, and that is how a single press release reads as a groundswell.
