Your Gut Is Worse Than A Coin Flip
Discretionary traders frequently underperform a coin flip once costs are included, which is the part intuition cannot price. The mechanism matters more than any specific figure: fees and spread are charged on every trade whether or not the instinct was right. Data-driven traders hit 55-65% easily. That 10% gap compounds to millions over years.
Why Gut Trading Fails
Human brains are optimized for survival, not profit. We see patterns that don't exist. We overweight recent data. We have confirmation bias. All of these are lethal to trading.
What Data Reveals That Gut Can't
Data shows you:
- Your actual win rate (not what you think it is)
- Your average winner vs. loser (are you cutting winners short?)
- Your biggest risk periods (when do you lose most?)
- Which signals actually work (which are noise?)
- Drawdown patterns (can you handle the stress?)
Building A Data-Driven System
Simple process:
- Hypothesis: "RSI below 30 on daily charts predicts reversals"
- Test: Run on 500 instances of RSI below 30
- Measure: What's the win rate? Average R-multiple?
- Decide: Is 55%+ win rate with 1.5R+ average winner? Trade it.
The Edge Is In The Data
Gut traders lose. Data traders compound. Data always wins. Track everything with TradePilot's trading journal.
