Candlestick Patterns: Reading Market Psychology
Candlestick patterns reveal market psychology through the relationship between opening, closing, high, and low prices. A single candle tells a story: struggle, indecision, or conviction. Smart traders read these stories and trade accordingly.
The 10 Most Reliable Patterns
1. Doji: Open and close at nearly the same price. Indecision candle. Appears at support/resistance, signals potential reversal. Win rate: 55-60% on next candle direction reversal.
2. Engulfing Pattern: Larger candle completely covers previous candle's body. Shows reversal of sentiment. Bullish engulfing (up candle after down candle) at support is strong buy. Win rate: 60-65%.
3. Hammer: Small body with long lower shadow. Appears at support. Bulls rejected sellers and closed higher. Strong reversal signal. Win rate: 62%+ on follow-through candle.
4. Shooting Star: Small body with long upper shadow. Appears at resistance. Bears rejected buyers. Strong reversal signal. Win rate: 60%+.
5. Morning Star: Three-candle reversal (down, small body gap down, up). Strong bullish reversal at lows. Win rate: 65%+.
6. Evening Star: Three-candle reversal (up, small body gap up, down). Strong bearish reversal at highs. Win rate: 65%+.
7. Inside Bar: Smaller candle completely within previous candle's range. High/low and close/open all inside. Breakout setup. Win rate: 58% on directional break.
8. Pin Bar: Long shadow one direction, small body opposite. Rejection candle. Used for trend continuation and reversal trades. Win rate: 60-65% depending on context.
9. Three White Soldiers: Three consecutive up closes with higher highs. Strong bullish continuation. Win rate: 70%+ if appearing after consolidation.
10. Three Black Crows: Three consecutive down closes with lower lows. Strong bearish continuation. Win rate: 70%+ if appearing after consolidation.
Critical Success Factor: Context Matters
A hammer at support after a downtrend is a far more meaningful signal than the same hammer mid-uptrend. Specific win-rate percentages get quoted for this and they vary wildly by market, timeframe and how the pattern is defined — the directional point holds, the numbers do not travel. Always analyze candlestick patterns within the context of support/resistance, trend direction, and volume.
Candlestick Trading System
Build a complete system:
- Identify key support/resistance levels
- Watch for candlestick reversal/continuation patterns at these levels
- Confirm pattern with volume (hammer should have buying volume on low)
- Confirm pattern with next candle (true reversal needs follow-through)
- Enter on pattern confirmation with stop below pattern low
- Target: Next resistance level or 2x risk distance
Pattern Failures and How to Avoid Them
Most traders fail with candlestick patterns because they trade patterns in isolation without support/resistance context. A hammer appearing in the middle of open space has much lower reliability than a hammer at a prior swing low. Always require contextual confirmation.

The Pattern Edge
Candlestick patterns identify psychological turning points with higher precision than moving averages alone. They're the canary in the coal mine for reversals and breakouts.
